Elementary Instrumental Music Lessons
Elementary instrumental music lessons are offered to all third - fifth grade students. Beginning in third grade, students may participate in orchestra/strings while band instrumental lessons begin in fourth grade. Orchestra instruments include viola, violin, cello, and bass. Band instruments include flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, percussion, saxophone (fifth grade students who played clarinet in fourth grade), among other instruments that may require either previous experience or private lessons. Lessons are held twice per week.
Registration begins in May of each year for lessons the following school year. The fee to participate in in-school lessons is $150.00 and is due prior to the student beginning lessons. Students who have financial need may apply for financial assistance; this includes students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. Financial assistance must be approved prior to a student participating in lessons. The link to the financial assistance form here. Payment can be made online through Unibank. Students are responsible for procuring their own instrument, which can be rented or purchased. More information about this is included in the section of frequently asked questions.
Students who do not take instrumental music lessons will attend Music Workshop.

How do I rent an instrument?
There are several vendors who are familiar with WPS’s instrumental music program and provide instruments for many students. The cost of rental varies by instrument. Local recommended vendors include:

How do I pay for lessons?
Payment can be made online through Unibank. From the drop down (select) menu, please choose Wayland Public Schools - Elementary Instrumental Music Program.
Payment must be received BEFORE a student can attend lessons.
Is financial assistance available?
Yes, families may apply for financial assistance by completing the application and submitting with all required financial documentation to the Business Manager of Wayland Public Schools. This application is required from everyone applying for financial assistance including those who receive free or reduced lunch. An application must be approved before the student can participate in lessons. Applications may be submitted anytime after May 1st for approval for the following school year. Please provide adequate time for the approval process.
What is the refund policy?
Refunds will be issued to families of students who discontinue lessons as follows:
100% refund if discontinue within the first 30 days of school
50% if discontinue within 31-60 days of the first day of school
No refund after 60 days
Can my student take the instrument on the bus?
Certain instruments are not allowed on the bus due to the size of the instrument and the families need to be able to transport these. Instruments requiring private transportation include percussion, bass, and cello.
Are private lessons available?
Yes, through Wayland School Community Programs, private lessons are available. Please follow this link.
Families can also find their own private tutors. Wayland High School Orchestra has a Practice Partner Program and WHS Band has Band Tutors available to assist your child in practicing skills.
Are there concerts throughout the year?
Yes, there are a variety of concerts throughout the year held both during the school day and in the evening. The culmination is a school wide concert held at the high school featuring students from the elementary schools, middle school, and high school.
